Alchemist: Basic Wand-making Instructions & Ogham Tree Chart

When martial artists become adept at moving their chi, they are then able to channel it through the weapon they are using and send that power into an attack or a defensive strike. The same principle applies to using a wand. Whether called “magic,” “energy,” “prana,” or “chi,” there is a force that can be focused and directed, with practice and disciplined intent.

However, a wand is more than a sword-- a wand was once part of a tree. Just as the branches of a living tree draw on the roots for their life force, so a wand cut from a tree draws its properties from the nature of the tree itself. It symbolically represents the whole, and is energetically, or magically, still connected to the root structure of the tree itself.

This means that the first step in crafting your own magic wand is to go out and befriend a tree. Maybe you already have a tree in mind? Go to that tree and deepen your relationship-- meditate in its shade, collect its fallen seeds, listen to the sound of its leaves in the breeze. Research what kind of tree it is, and the history of the land upon which it grows. Get to know this tree well, with respect and appreciation.

When you feel ready, go to the tree with a sharp set of clippers and an offering. This might be some clear water, plant food, a green crystal, a lock of your hair, or anything else that feels appropriate (and is not harmful to the earth.) First, ask permission from the tree to take a wand from its branches-- you may be surprised at your ability to perceive an answer. If you receive permission, cut a medium sized portion of a branch in a swift, confident movement so as to minimize the moment of trauma to the plant.

Leave your offering of thanks, and sit and commune with the tree for a few minutes. Then take your branch home, clean it up, and decorate it according to your personal taste. Use your wand every time you meditate or pray, or whenever you would like to direct and focus your energy towards an objective. Below, you’ll find the traditional Druidic system of tree symbolism to help you understand the personality of the tree you have chosen. Magic is power-- use it well!
