Magical Living: 5 Tips for Beginners


Sometimes, the practice of magic (or any spiritual journey!) can be a lonely, winding path. As we start out, it can be difficult to differentiate between doubt and wisdom; fear and intuition. Part of MoonHaven's mission is to be a guiding presence for you as your mastery unfolds! While community events are so important for your personal enrichment and sense of connection, there are other things you can do in the meantime while you are waiting for the next workshop to arrive. Here are some tips from my personal experience of magical living to get you started.


1. Find a friend on the path.

The importance of friends and community cannot be overstated. If you can find even one like-minded soul to walk with you and share support and inspiration, your path will be so much lighter and more joyful! Having a real live person that you can talk to in the external world helps your magic to remain grounded in the world of physical manifestation, not just the inner realm of the mind.


2. Start keeping track of the phases of the moon.

Ultimately, we are a part of nature, and we are affected by all of the heavenly bodies, including the sun, planets, and stars. As you obtain more knowledge about living with the seasons and the zodiacal wheel, you will feel more connected to the subtle world around you-- but a good place to start is to notice the moon. Your body is mostly made of water, and like the sea, it responds to the pull of this beautiful luminary! Start to notice when the moon is full or new, and notice how it affects your body, mind, and surroundings.


3. Spend more time in nature.

Naturalist John Muir wrote, "Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity." To practice magic is to connect with the wild and powerful part of yourself that is nature! The more time you spend among plants and living creatures, the more you will awaken your life force and your understanding of how all life is connected. Whether it's a garden, a mountain, or the ocean, go often, and go with wonder in your eyes.


4. Connect to source with daily introspection.

For may people, meditation is the simplest and most powerful way to connect to the deepest self. If meditation is not right for you at this time, you might try stream-of-consciousness journaling, tai chi, or even a few minutes of silence as you sip your morning coffee on the back porch. What matters is that this time is spent quietly listening to that still voice within you, so that it can grow in strength and become the compass that keeps your magical practice pointing you towards truth and your highest good.


5. Watch and listen for the messages all around you.

The universe is speaking to you now, already! And the more you pay attention and deepen your study of these divine messages, the more clearly they will reach you. For some, the appearance of certain animals represents a message of wisdom, like a butterfly reminding you to evolve and trust change. For others, repeating numbers carry significance, or finding a lost penny on the ground. Begin to trust that these are not just coincidences, but genuine assistance from the divine.
